Brief Description:  The Flyer Comes Home To Roost - Part 02

The next morning, the weather in Livermore was unbelievably beautiful and clear. We met at Harry's hangar at 9am and got a weather briefing from the FAA. Obviously Livermore was good, but the Sacramento Valley wasn't looking too good. Travis, Red Bluff, and Redding were all reporting solid IFR conditions. But the briefer indicated that slightly West of the Sacramento Valley and along the coast it was clear. We decided to take the coastal route instead of going up the Sacramento Valley, and then cut back over in Oregon somewhere that seemed right. The briefer also indicated that North of Redding all the way to Albany it was clear with the exception of Medford which was currently reporting IFR conditions.

We decided that was probably the best weather we were going to get this late in the season and saddled up and headed out for take off. Once airborne, we could definitely see the Tule fog in the Sacramento Valley, but the Napa Valley was clear. We flew up the Napa valley and as we got to the top, we noticed that the fog was pretty much clear North of Red Bluff. Yahoo! We turned toward Redding and were back on a normal course for Albany! We cruised about 8600 feet most of the way and the air the entire trip was smooth as glass. Pretty amazing. We carried a 10-15 knot tailwind nearly the whole way too which wasn't hard to take.

Conditions in Oregon were exactly as expected with a small fog-bank hovering right over the top of Medford, but completely clear everywhere else along the way. The Eugene-Albany-Salem Valley was absolutely beautiful - clear, clean and oh-so green. A nice left-downwind for Runway 16 at Albany and just that quick, we were finally there arriving at 12:25pm (departure from Livermore was at 9:40am). Not bad time considering that slight detour around the fog in the Valley.
