Brief Description:  First Engine Start - Part 01

Project HOBBS Meter: 54 Days

The first engine start went amazingly well. The only problem really was that I thought that I'd been charging the battery with my external charger all during the project, but really I was only charging it when the master switch was on. I was hooking the charger up to the Starter Relay supply lug, but for some reason I didn't realize that this was only hot when the Master Relay was engaged. So we dorked around for a while trying to figure out why the battery seemed "dead". Once that was resolved, things went pretty great.

With the engine running, I was able to check out some of the new transducers that had been installed as well as the new EMS (Engine Monitor System). For the most part everything worked perfectly right out of the box. The only exception was the fuel flow on the Dynon EMS. Long story short, the problem was that there are TWO Yellow wires coming out of the EMS harness and I picked the wrong one of the two to wire to the flow transducer. It seems to me that if you're going to have the same colored wiring coming from a factory built harness, you should probably externally label them. The transducer Yellow was loosely "bundled" with the associated Ground and Power wires, but that's still pretty obscure in my opinion.

I'm happy to report that there weren't any fuel leaks with any of the new transducers and all of the new controls also worked nicely as expected. It was pretty cool to be this close to flying again...
