And so I couldn't put it off any longer. It was time to start wiring everything together. When I removed the old instrument panel, I basically just cut all of the wires off that went to the various systems such as the Landing and Taxi lights, Strobes, etc. with the notion that I would just butt-splice the outputs from the VP-200. In retrospect, I kind of wish I'd just pulled all of the old wiring out and repulled in new wire. Seemed like too much work at the time, but in reality, wouldn't have added that much extra time.
I planed all of the various loads and outputs for the VP-200, made a giant pile of wire labels for both ends of everything, and then just started cross connecting everything one wire at a time. Once all of the connections were made, both old and new, I tidied everything all up with some spiral wrap.
Even with the myriad of interconnections both behind the panel and forward through the firewall, I ended up with only a couple of "issues" that turned out to pretty easy to solve. The oddest one was that I had put the EFIS on a 5amp circuit which was plenty for the display unit. But I had also wired the power inputs to the two autopilot servos to the same circuit. Everything worked great for a little while until I engaged the autopilot. The autopilot servos bumped the current draw up to just over the 5amp level and the VP-200 would power off the circuit after a few seconds. It took a little head scratching to figure out exactly what was going on because the EFIS has a battery backup that kicks on when the power is lost, but the autopilot servos do not. So all of a sudden, the autopilot would disengage, but the EFIS was still going. Long story short, I was able to move the EFIS/Servo connection to a 10amp circuit on the VP-200 and everything's working great.
