Brief Description:  Autopilot Servo Installation - Part 01

I replaced the crusty Trio single-axis wing leveler with a new Dynon dual-axis autopilot that is integrated directly with the Dynon Skyview EFIS system. It comes with two geared stepper motor servos similar to what I used in the RV-8 with the TruTrak system.

Installation of the elevator servo was pretty straightforward. The aileron installation, however, was quite a bit more challenging. I opted to mount the servo on the left side of the fuselage instead of the more common right side to avoid having to move a couple of coax antenna cables that preexisted. I should have just moved the coax's though, because that would have been a whole lot easier than trying to get things lined up and not binding on the left side. Well, probably it would have been easier. I might of had just as much trouble on the right side too. Who knows. Anyway, after a lot of dorking around and moving the servo back .25" - twice - I finally got a combination of locations that worked well and didn't bind.

The crotch strap belt mount gave me the most trouble as it was exactly where I wanted the pushrod to go. I finally moved the strap mount up some, which gave me to room I needed. This installation was indeed a hair puller...

As an aside, after having flown with the Dynon autopilot for 10 hours or so now, its definitely better than the Trio system, but it pales in comparison to the smoothness and accuracy of the TruTrak system that I have in the RV-8. If I had to do it again, I would probably seriously consider doing the TruTrak instead of the incremental addition of the servos to the Dynon. IMHO, the TruTrak is a much better system. $.02
