Brief Description:  New Instrument Panel Mockups - Part 01

I got back on the 'ol computer and started laying out a new instrument panel that would hold all of the new, all-glass instrumentation I had planned for the RV-6. The new components included a Vertical Power VP-200 system, a 10" Dynon Skyview EFIS, a Garmin 696 GPS with XM Weather, a Matronics FuelChec DX, a PS Engineering PM3000 Stereo Intercom, and a Kenwood Entertainment system. There would also be a few other items to be added such as new large air vents, a couple of switches, and the headphone jacks (both the traditional style and the new Bose in-line power variety) wired in parrellel). The only piece of avionics I reused was the King KX125 TSO since it seemed like it worked pretty well. I did order a new front bezel and lens set for it, however, and even it looks like brand new now (those bezels and lens aren't cheap, btw, ouch!).

Pulling on my experience from the RV-8, I made a few paper-doll mockups of the new instrument panel and cut them out and trial fit them. Then I sent the DXF file to Stienair and had them cut a couple of iterations of Plexiglass panels to get things just right. Finally, I had them cut the new panel from a .063 2024-T3 blank from Van's. BTW, I opted for the "extended" version of this panel which is about 2-3" taller than the original panel. This worked out nicely as I was able to mount the throttle and other controls right in the panel without having to have either a bolt-on lower flange (like original), or one of those annoying vertical floor-to-panel deals that makes it impossible to move your legs around.

I trial fit all of the instruments into the Plexiglass mockups and then put the whole thing into the airplane. Things fit pretty well out of the gate, but a couple of iterations got things really fitting like a glove.
